Price After Discount: Savings = Original Price × (Discount % ÷ 100); Final Price = (Original Price − Savings) × (1 + Tax % ÷ 100). With the default $80 original price at 25% off, Savings = $80 × (25 ÷ 100) = $20, so the price before tax is $80 − $20 = $60. Add an 8% sales tax on top and this discount calculator shows a final price after discount of $60 × (1 + 8 ÷ 100) = $64.80, since tax is applied to the discounted price, not the original one. Find Discount %: Discount % = ((Original Price − Sale Price) ÷ Original Price) × 100. With the default $50 original price and $35 sale price, that's (($50 − $35) ÷ $50) × 100 = (15 ÷ 50) × 100 = 30% — a fast way to find discount rate on any advertised sale price calculator claim. Stacked Discounts: Final Price = Original Price × (1 − d1) × (1 − d2) × …, multiplying the remaining fractions rather than adding percentages. With the default $200 item and two successive discounts of 20% then 10%: Step 1 applies 20% to $200 → $200 × (1 − 0.20) = $160; Step 2 applies 10% to the already-reduced $160 → $160 × (1 − 0.10) = $144. Total Saved = $200 − $144 = $56, and the Effective Discount = ($56 ÷ $200) × 100 = 28% — noticeably less than the 30% Simple Sum of the two percentages, which is exactly why a stacked discount calculator or successive discount calculator gives a different answer than simple addition.
A common shopping mistake is assuming two discounts add together — "20% off, then an extra 10% off" feels like 30% off, but it's actually only 28% off, because the second discount applies to the already-discounted price. If "Effective Discount" is noticeably lower than "Simple Sum": that's expected, not a bug — each successive discount in the Stacked Discounts tab is applied to the already-reduced price, so the real savings are always a little smaller than adding the percentages.
If "Before Tax" and "You Pay" look far apart: double-check the sales tax percentage you entered — a higher tax rate widens the gap between the discounted price and what you actually hand over at checkout.
