The exact math this recipe scaler uses behind every scaled ingredient
Every ingredient row uses the exact same scale factor — calculated once from your Original Servings and Desired Servings inputs — so a recipe with two ingredients or twenty is scaled with identical precision. The Unit field (cup, tsp, g, etc.) is carried through as plain text next to each quantity; it isn't converted between measurement systems, so entering "cup" keeps the scaled result labeled in cups.
Desired Servings ÷ Original Servings — one ratio applied to every ingredient in the recipe, whether you're scaling up or down.
Decimals close to 1/8, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, or 3/4 (within about 0.06) are also shown as that fraction, e.g. 2.5 cups displays as "2.5 (2 1/2) cup".
The Unit field is a text label only — it's carried through with the quantity but never converted between systems (cups stay cups, grams stay grams).

Type the number of servings your recipe currently makes into the Original Servings field — the number listed on the recipe card or in the cookbook.

Explanation: Every quantity — from 2 cups of flour to half a teaspoon of baking soda — is multiplied by the same 2.5 scale factor, keeping the recipe's proportions identical at the larger batch size. Notice that 1.25 cups of butter doesn't round to a clean whole number; the friendly fraction "1 1/4" next to it makes it easy to measure using a standard set of measuring cups. Baking soda is a good candidate to taste-check separately, though — leavening agents don't always scale perfectly linearly in baked goods, even though the math above treats it the same as flour or sugar.
A soup recipe that serves 6 is being scaled down to serve 3 — a scale factor of 3 ÷ 6 = 0.5. Two quarts of broth becomes 1 quart, 3 carrots becomes 1.5 (displayed as "1 1/2"), and 1 tablespoon of salt becomes 0.5 tablespoon (displayed as "1/2"). Scaling down works exactly the same way as scaling up — every quantity is multiplied by the same 0.5 factor, just below 1 instead of above it.
Reading the scaled quantities and rounding for practical measuring
Each row in your results shows the ingredient name, its original quantity and unit, and the newly scaled quantity in teal — given as a decimal (rounded to two places) and, where useful, a friendly fraction in parentheses. The scale-factor note above the table (e.g. "Scale factor: ×2.5 (4 → 10 servings)") is a quick sanity check that you entered the servings you intended.
The friendly fraction only appears when the scaled quantity's decimal portion lands within about 0.06 of a common cooking fraction — 1/8, 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 2/3, or 3/4. If your result doesn't land near one of those (say, 2.83), only the decimal is shown, since no clean fraction is close enough to be genuinely useful.
Kitchen measuring tools rarely offer more precision than an eighth of a cup or a quarter teaspoon, so treat the decimal as the mathematically exact answer and the fraction as your practical measuring target. For amounts smaller than 1/8 of a unit, or oddly specific decimals like 0.83, consider using a kitchen scale for weight-based ingredients, or rounding to the nearest measuring spoon or cup you own and adjusting slightly to taste.
Remember that the Unit column is carried through as-is — if you typed "cup," your scaled result stays in cups; it won't automatically become grams or milliliters.
